Outcast Theatre Collective is a professional theatre company dedicated to the advancement of artists from historically marginalized communities.
Pre-Covid, we offered traditional programming - most recently Topdog/Underdog and Single Black Female - as well as creating an ensemble dedicated to developing Theatre of the Oppressed programming in Tampa Bay.
In response to the COVID crisis, our Theatre of the Oppressed Ensemble adapted the work of Brazilian theatrical innovator Augusto Boal for use over Zoom. Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) is an interactive art form designed to help society rehearse for a reality free of oppressions. Based in exercises designed to liberate body and mind, TO allows us to explore the ways in which we are conditioned to accept less than we deserve. Since pivoting to Zoom, Outcast has presented TO workshops to audiences from across the globe.
In partnership with Powerstories Theatre, Outcast is producing the The Voices of Truth Festival, a festival dedicated to performances based on true stories coming to Tampa (with digital viewing options) in March 2021. As part of the festival, Outcast will present several original works.
Stealthcare: Transphobia in Medicine is a Forum Theatre piece developed using the techniques of Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed. This form of theatre invites the audience to engage in active problem solving around issues faced by members of marginalized communities. We’ll introduce ourselves, warm you up, and then turn you loose on telemedical transphobia.
